British UEFA Cup hopes rest on the shoulders of Bolton and Rangers after Tottenham and Everton were both knocked out on penalties last night. Both teams were trailing after the first leg, but spirited performances saw the games going the full distance. Everton had chances to win the tie in normal time as goals from Andy Johnson and Mikel Arteta drew the Merseysiders' level in a lively encounter at Goodison Park. In the Phillip's Arena, Dimitar Berbatov capped a wonderful performance with the equalising goal 9 minutes from time. The evening ultimatley ended in disappointment as Everton and Tottenham both failed from the spot and fans were left frustrated as their teams made an early exit from the competition.
In the Premier League, Chelsea bounced back from their FA Cup disappointment by thrashing rock bottom Derby County 6-1 at Stamford Bridge with 4 goals from Frank Lampard. Fans had called for an impressive display and Avram Grant's men delivered a performance that lifted the spirits of supporters as they closed the gap at the top to 5 points. Derby County were left staring two unwanted records in the face: the Premiership's lowest points total and worst goal differance are surely now only a formality for the East Midland's outfit.
Elsewhere Jermain Defoe scored twice as Portsmouth beat relegation threatened Birmingham 4-2. Kanu and Hermann Hreidarsson added the other two goals as the FA Cup semi finalists continued their recent good form. Early goals from Defoe were cancelled out as Birmingham sought to protect their 5 match unbeaten run. Despite enjoying most of the possession and chances in the second half, Birmingham were unable to capitalise and it was Portsmouth who went home with the 3 points.
Middlesbrough were left rueing missed chances as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa. Stuart Downing had given the Teesiders an early lead with his 19th minute effort that beat England hopeful Scott Carson. However Gareth Southagte’s men were fuming with the penalty decision that led to Gareth Barry’s 74th minute equaliser. The result dented Aston Villa's push for a Champions League place, as Martin O'Neil bemoaned his sides' lack of defenders as the Premiership run in gathers pace.
